What does a Content Manager do?

In today's blog post, we take a closer look at a common profession in marketing, namely the job of content manager.

English titles are becoming increasingly common in the world of marketing and business (or “business” as it is called today). For many, it can be difficult to distinguish between these different titles. We have previously written about a couple of these titles, namely Copywriters, Art Directors, and Creative Directors, in an attempt to clarify the concepts. Today, we will dive into what a content manager does.

What are the job responsibilities?

A content manager is responsible for creating and managing content on various digital platforms. The main task is therefore to ensure that the company's content is relevant, engaging, and follows the company's guidelines and marketing strategies. This can involve many different types of tasks, but the most common tasks for a content manager are these:

Content strategy

Developing and implementing a strategy for the content to be published on the company's social media. Here we have written more about how to develop a social media strategy.

Creating and editing content

In addition to planning the content, the content manager is also responsible for producing it. The content can take many different forms, such as articles, blog posts, videos, and social media posts. Sometimes the content manager writes the content themselves, while other times it may involve coordinating with other writers, designers, or video producers. The content manager then also needs to review the content to ensure that it is relevant, accurate, and of good quality, as well as ensuring that it is keyword-optimized by reviewing SEO and SEM.

Managing channels

Once the content has been created and reviewed, it is time to publish it on relevant channels such as the company's website, blog, and social media platforms. Here, the content manager may also be responsible for responding to comments and other forms of interaction.

Analysis and optimization

As with all other strategic work, it is important to analyze how the content that is released is performing. There are plenty of different tools for measuring performance, such as measuring traffic, engagement, and conversions. By trying to understand these key figures, the content can then be optimized to increase performance.

What skills does a content manager need?

Since a content manager can have a wide range of tasks, they also need a broad skill set. To be good at their job, they need creativity and communication skills as well as technical and analytical skills.

In terms of communication skills, a content manager needs to be able to write clearly and persuasively and adapt their writing to different platforms. Communication skills also include being able to edit content to ensure that nothing is unclear or superfluous.

A content manager also needs to be creative in the sense that they need to be able to generate ideas for good content, keep track of current trends in order to use them in their content, and create interesting material.

Finally, a content manager should also have certain technical skills. They need to be proficient in search engine optimization (SEO), as it is important to understand relevant keywords and other SEO techniques in order for the content to be widely distributed. Similarly, it is important to be able to use relevant data to analyze how the content has performed compared to its goals. In addition to this, a content manager needs to have specific skills in areas such as photography/film, various design and writing programs, web publishing tools, and digital platforms. In other words, content management is a creative, communicative, and technical profession.

How do I become a content manager?

If you are interested in working as a content manager, it is a good idea to first obtain a basic education in areas such as marketing, communication, or journalism. There are also specific programs and courses in content marketing and digital communication that can be useful. You can also gain experience in content management by creating content for your own blog or social media platform, applying for an internship/part-time job in marketing, or participating in volunteer projects where you can help create content. You can then build a portfolio with the content you have created and start applying for jobs as a content manager!
